He has acted as Troels Hartmann (Copenhagen mayoral candidate) in The Killing and [1] Charles Augustus Magnussen (third series of Sherlock), the Russian president Viktor Petrov on Netflix's American House of Cards, and Grand Admiral Thrawn from Star Wars Rebels. He was given the Reumert Prize of Honour in 2011. At the age of 27, he entered the National Theatre School of Denmark. He graduated from the school in 1995. He was also featured in The Killing's drama. Then, he appeared in Borgen III and Those Who Kill both of which were highly acclaimed Danish dramas. He also had a prominent part in an episode of the BBC drama Sherlock as the blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen.In the American television show House of Cards, he played the president of Russia. He received an International Emmy Award in 2018 in recognition of his role in Danish television drama Herrens Veje. This series was broadcast in the UK in the year 2019 under the name Ride Upon the Storm.
